Man ‘too drunk’ to remember raping niece
A 44-year-old man has pleaded guilty in the Alice Springs Supreme Court to raping his niece in the central Australian community of Imanpa.
The court heard the woman had been drinking with friends in November 2005, when she left the group to find some chewing tobacco.
Her uncle approached her as she was walking, hit her from behind, dragged her by the hair and took her around the back of a hall, where he stripped and raped her.
Prosecutor Nanette Rogers told the court the 34-year-old victim was less than five feet tall and incapable of defending herself.
She said the man already had six convictions for violent crime, one of which involved the death of a woman.
The man’s lawyer, Warwick Smith, described his client’s life as dysfunctional.
He said his client suffered memory loss from petrol sniffing and could not remember the incident because he was so drunk.
The man is expected to be sentenced next week.
