Taxi driver arrested for making 667 prank calls to police

A taxi driver was arrested Tuesday for making 667 prank calls to Tokyo police over a six-hour period in February, investigators said.

Yukio Sakai, 63, a resident of Koto-ku, Tokyo, is accused of obstruction of business. Sakai admitted to having made the calls but denied he attempted to obstruct police business.

“I wanted to consult police over trouble involving my neighborhood. I had no intention of obstructing police business,” he was quoted as telling investigators.

Between 12:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, Sakai called the Metropolitan Police Department 667 times on his mobile phone without justifiable reason, thereby obstructing police business, investigators said.

“This is Sakai speaking. I’m not calling you over any crime or accident,” he was quoted as saying in one of the calls.
