Teen gives pitbull an extreme makeover
(CBS) WEST PALM BEACH, Fl. When pit bulls are in the news it is most likely because they’ve been involved in a mauling incident, but in West Palm Beach it was the dog who was the victim of violence, after police say a teen cut the ears off a pit bull puppy with a pair of scissors.
Police say a 16-year-old boy, whose name was not released because of his age, performed the ad-hoc surgery on the dog March 20th, and left it on the front porch of the person who bred the dog. He was charged Thursday with animal cruelty.
A vet who later treated the animal said the surgery would have left the dog in extreme pain and suffering.
Investigators say the teen told them he cut the ears for cosmetic reasons. Some pit bull owners engage in a practice of cropping the dogs ears, a process critics believe is inhumane even if done by medical personnel.
It is not illegal to own and breed pit bulls in Palm Beach County.
The teen was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center in Palm Beach County.
